Now I have been working for about 1.5 years in (mainly offline) sales of PaceX B.V. and I still read/hear regularly that cars are often stolen. Just for fun, take a look at https://lnkd.in/ewWrPDXM Here you can see that cars are stolen almost daily. In 2023, according to autoverzekering.nl no fewer than 5844 cars and 845 motorcycles stolen.
These are not all stolen during a test drive, but also through burglary (the 'difficult' way). The 'easy' way is to simply take a test drive at a car dealership, where often there is not enough control or registration done. When taking a test drive, you often also receive the spare key, as these usually hang as a set in the safe.
This week, unfortunately, it happened at a car dealership that also made a vlog about it. And a few weeks ago, I saw an expensive VW Transporter that was being sought: it never returned from a test drive (In other words, sold for € 0,-)
However, it is often the vehicles in the mid-range segment with a price range between 12 and 25k (the 'ordinary affordable' unremarkable vehicles) that turn out to be the biggest target.
Of course, as a company, you try to keep the threshold as low as possible and proudly show that you trust the customer. That is, of course, nice and understandable, but sooner or later, there will come a day when things go wrong. You hand over a car, and the customer takes full responsibility for the car and your green license plates. You wouldn't just lend your personal car to a stranger, would you?
Recently, I have spoken to a few insurance companies. One by one, they are increasingly moving towards requiring not only the registration of personal details but also a driver's license check. If you do not do this, the car is NOT insured against theft. This applies to both the automotive and motorcycle industries.
